Trojans down Hornets in ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( – The Troy volleyball team opened the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational with a 3-1 win over host Alabama State on Friday night at Lockhart Gymnasium.

The Trojans (4-4) began the match with a first set win, 25-19 and stormed to a huge 25-14 victory in the second set, in large part to Sara Landis who had nine kills after the first two sets, eight of them in the first set.

After a back and forth third set that the Trojans dropped 26-24, Troy pulled away following a 14-14 tie and won the fourth set 25-20.

“I’m glad we got back on the winning track,” Sonny Kirkpatrick said. “We worked on a lot of things this week in practice and we put them into the match. So it was good to see the things that we’re working on are paying off. We look forward to getting back tomorrow against Chicago State and getting better.”

Sara Landis recorded 13 kills, which tied a career-high for the senior. She last had 13 kills against UL Lafayette on October 17, 2015.

With the two teams tied at 14 in the fourth set, Troy rattled off four straight points thanks to a couple of kills from Reina Terry and one from Lauren Long with a Hornet attack error in the middle to take an 18-14 lead. This would lead to a 25-20 fourth set victory clinching the win for the Trojans.

  • Lauren Long was tied for second on the team with nine kills. The nine kills is a career-high for Long. Her previous career-high was six, which she recorded multiple times over her career.
  • Leah Causey was the other Trojan who had nine kills. It’s the second-most she had recorded this year, as she picked up 10 in the season opener against USC Upstate.
  • Troy had 11 total blocks tonight, which is a season-best. Causey led the way with one solo block and six block assists and Landis added to her fantastic offensive night with one solo block and five block assists on the other side of the net.
  • With a win in Friday’s match, the Trojans remain undefeated against Alabama State in the all-time series and are now 29-0 against the Hornets.

The Trojans will return to the court on Saturday as they continue the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational with a match against Chicago State at noon and conclude the tournament against Savannah State at 5 p.m.
