Troy, Mercer deadlock in scoreless draw

MACON, Ga. (  – The Troy soccer team did not allow a shot on goal, but failed to score as the Trojans and Mercer tied, 0-0, in double overtime.

Brooke McKee led the team with six shots while Abby Reynolds added four. As a team, the Trojans attempted 15 shots and 15 corners.

Goalkeeper Mikki Lewis did not face a shot the entire game, which is testament to the solid work by the Troy defense. Mercer finished with six shots, none on goal.

“That was a tough game to not come away with a win,” head coach Jason Hamilton said.

“15 shots and 15 corners show we created a lot, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. We scored on the first corner of the game, but it was called back and their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves in the first 10 minutes of the game. Defensively, we were very pleased not giving up a shot on goal. We are going to need that momentum going into Sunday’s game against Florida State.

Troy (4-3-1) travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to face No. 1 Florida State at 3 p.m. The Trojans have played FSU just once before, falling to the Seminoles 8-0 in 2007.

  • Annabell Simpson returned to the lineup and attempted two shots in the game.
  • The last time the Trojans did not allow a shot on goal was in a 1-0 win over Kennesaw State in 2014.
  • Five Troy players played the full 110 minutes (Mikki Lewis, Alex Huynh, Haley Roberson, Nicole Strahl, Brooke McKee).
  • The shutout was the fourth of the season for Troy.
