Trojans ascend to 3rd; Vannoy tied for 3rd individually at AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic
DULUTH, Ga. (troytrojans.com) – Paced by three players in the red, the Troy men’s golf team fired the low round of the day and climbed into third place in Tuesday’s final round of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at the Berkeley Hills Country Club.
Clayton Vannoy, who entered the week ranked 53rd nationally, shot a 2-under 70 in the final round – with a pair of birdies and an eagle – and finished the tournament in a tie for third place with a 7-under 209. Vannoy has now played six of his nine rounds under par this season and has a 70.77 stroke average through three tournaments.
Jared Bettcher fired the third-lowest round of the day and fifth-lowest of the event with a 5-under 67 to lead Troy on Tuesday. Bettcher’s round featured six birdies and was flawless until a bogey on No. 18. He climbed 32 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 16th place with teammate Cam Norman.
Noman was solid throughout the tournament as he opened with a 4-under 68 and followed with rounds of 74 and 73 to finish 1-under. Luke Moser climbed seven spots into a tie for 21st after shooting a 1-under 71; he rallied with a pair of birdies around a bogey on his final three holes. Calum Masters rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 28th place after shooting a 3-over 75 in the final round and a 1-over 217 for the tournament.
No. 25 Ole Miss won the team title by 15 shots over Lipscomb, while Troy was one shot back of Lipscomb in third place. Troy entered the tournament ranked 73rd nationally and picked up a 15-shot victory over No. 53 Middle Tennessee. Ole Miss’ Braden Thorberry claimed individual medalist honors with an 18-under 198.
Competing as individuals, Troy freshmen Sam Prater and Jake Tiffin finished tied for 72nd and in 82nd place, respectively.
