CBS 8 CONTACTS     CBS 8 LINKS     CBS 8 HISTORY

WAKA is the CBS-affiliated television station serving Central, West and South Alabama with analog and digital broadcasting capabilites.  Our market, ranked 118th by A.C. Nielsen, consists of more than a quarter-million homes in a 15-county area.  Some of the cities in our coverage area include: Montgomery, Selma, Prattville, Wetumpka, Tuskegee, Alexander City, Troy, Andalusia, Greenville, Camden and Demopolis.

We pride ourselves on being innovators in the way we serve our viewers.  CBS 8 was the first station in the Montgomery market to broadcast digitally at full power.  That means more people can receive our signal throughout the area.

CBS 8 has made a tremendous commitment to covering the weather with our CBS 8 First Alert Weather Network.  In 2007, we debuted an all-new, state of the art Weather Center with the latest in computer forecasting technology.  Our team of meteorologists can forecast severe weather better than ever before using new tools our viewers have already come to depend on when their lives are on the line.

One of those tools is the Exclusive CBS 8 Alfa SkyCam Network.  This is a system of cameras stationed throughout key areas of Alabama that transmits Live video and weather conditions.  No other station in our area has this capability.  Our meteorologists can use the cameras to pinpoint snow, hail, floods -- even tornados.

CBS 8 is the only area station with three working newsrooms -- in Montgomery, West Alabama and South Alabama.

The CBS 8 West Alabama Newsroom in downtown Selma covers Dallas, Lowndes, Wilcox, Marengo and Perry counties.  When news breaks in that area, we have a huge head start in getting to the scene with Live coverage.

The CBS 8 South Alabama Newsroom on the courthouse square in Andalusia provides a hub for crews to cover Covington, Crenshaw, Pike, Butler and Conecuh counties.  During hurricane season, we can cover dangerous weather conditions much more easily by having this office with its Live capabilites.

CBS 8 was the first station in our area with a Live 9 p.m. newscast.  Since January 2007, we have produced "CW News at 9" on WBMM 22, Montgomery's CW affiliate. Viewers who miss our early evening  newscasts depend on getting a complete report of the day's news at 9 p.m.

Our sports department, called "The 8 Team" is recognized year after year by the Associated Press for excellence in covering all types of sports in an upbeat, energetic way.  We work with the American Red Cross to present "Tide n Tiger Night" every April, featuring top athletic stars from the Univ. of Alabama and Auburn University who sign autographs as part of this important yearly fundraiser.

CBS 8 helps the community in countless ways.  For more than a decade, we have been home to the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  We also work throughout the year with the Leukemia and Lymphona Society to help those battling blood-related cancers.

CBS 8 is owned by Bahakel Communications of Charlotte, NC -- a leader in television and radio station ownership.  The other Bahakel-owned TV stations are:

     WCCB   Fox 18      Charlotte, NC
     WOLO  ABC 25      Columbia, SC
WFXB   Fox 43       Florence/Myrtle Beach, SC
     WBBJ   ABC 7        Jackson, TN

With the birth of digital broadcasting, you can bet that CBS 8 will continue to be an innovator in providing quality programming, news and weather coverage for all familes in our 15-county region.
