It appears that many Americans with serious weight problems don't even realize it.

A new survey finds 30% of overweight people say they think of themselves as normal sized.

70% of those who are clinically obese describe themselves as merely overweight.

Not dealing with a weight problem could increase their risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.


 
Sleep Habits Could Affect How You Eat Print E-mail

More evidence that too little sleep is bad for the diet.

Researchers say teenagers who don't get a full 8 hours a night eat more fatty foods and snacks than teens who get a good night's sleep.

The link between sleep and diet was stronger in girls than boys.

Only a third of teenagers in the study slept for an average of 8 hours or more.


 
Study: Veterans with PTSD Have Higher Dementia Risks Print E-mail

Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder are twice as likely to develop dementia than veterans who don't have the disorder.

That's according to a new study of 10,000 veterans.

Researchers say it's not clear why.

It could be the disorder creates changes in the brain that leads to dementia.

Scientists also speculate that a person susceptible to P.T.S.D. may also be at risk for the other.

 


 
Brain Activities May Harm Alzheimer's Patients Print E-mail

Mentally stimulating activities have long been known to help delay Alzheimer's, but a new study shows that despite the initial slow down, mind exercises may actually speed up the disease in the long run.

Researchers found that people who have a more active mind were able to hold off the disease longer, but once diagnosed, their decline was more rapid compared to people without a lot of mental activity.

 


 
FDA Concerned about Weight Loss Drug Print E-mail

There's growing concern about the weight loss drug Meridia.

A new study finds it can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in people who have pre-existing heart disease.

Questions about Meridia's safety led regulators in Europe to pull the drug off the market in January.

A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel will review the drug later this month.


 
Headphones Could Cause Hearing Damage Print E-mail

There's more evidence that listening to headphones too loud or too long could damage hearing.

Researchers studied more than 8,000 adolescent girls over a 24 year period.

They found those using headphones were 80% more likely to have impaired hearing than those who didn't.
