Breakthrough in Treating Certain Heart Problems

By Molly Clifton

Scientists have identified a protein that seems to reverse the symptoms of heart failure in old age.

Harvard researchers injected old mice with a blood protein known as GDF 11.

They found the protein reduced the mice hearts in size and thickness, resembling the healthy hearts of younger mice.

Heart failure is an increasingly common condition that leaves the heart unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.

Researchers say the finding is a huge discovery and could change the way we think about aging.
