HPV Infection Rate is Dropping in Women

By Molly Grady

A new study finds the HPV vaccine is lowering infection rates, even among young women who are not vaccinated.

Doctors at Cincinnati Children's Hospital say infections dropped 69 percent in vaccinated women and 49 percent in unvaccinated women.

Researchers say this is the first study to show so called herd protection, which happens when a large number of people are immunized against a contagious disease.

More than 35 million people were vaccinated in recent years for the human papillomavirus.
