The number of people infected with measles in the US shot up last year to the highest level since 1996.

The Centers for Disease Control says 222 people came down with the contagious respiratory disease.

Most of the sick were not vaccinated and many contracted measles outside the U.S.

In a typical year, there are 50 to 60 cases in the US.
