Which Patients are Being Prescribed Pain Medications?

By Molly Clifton

New research shows more than half of all non-surgical patients receive powerful opioid drugs in the hospital.

Opioids are narcotic pain medications including oxycodone and morphine.

They are expected to be prescribed to patients undergoing operations, but a new analysis finds they are widely prescribed to all kinds of patients at very high doses.

Also of concern to researchers, about half these patients were sent home with prescriptions for these medications.
