Few Private Schools Signed Up For Tax Credit Program

By Alabama News Network

For many school districts, classes will start back in just under a month.

But only  seven private schools are signed up for Alabama's new program, which gives tax credits for schools to transfer there from failing public schools.

State Department of Revenue officials say they haven't heard much interest in the program from private schools. The department is in charge of developing regulations for those tax credits.

Proponents of the program say regulations are coming late, which is why some private schools haven't signed on yet.

Many Alabama school districts will be back in session on August 19th, but the regulations likely won't be in place until after that.
