Summary of action in Alabama Legislature

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the 21st meeting day of the regular session:




-Gave final approval to bill to transfer the Industrial Development and Training Institute from the Postsecondary Education Department to the Commerce Department. Goes to governor.


-Approved a bill to provide for workers compensation to pay for burial expenses when person dies on job. Goes to Senate.


-Democrats used delaying tactics to avoid considering a bill to require people to register 17 days or more before an election rather than the current 10 days. House adjourned without taking vote on bill.


-Approved a bill to require the Department of Corrections to notify the public when there is an escape. Goes to Senate.


-Approved a bill to allow merchants to find certified inspectors to make sure equipment to weigh and measure is working properly. Goes to Senate.


-Approved a local bill to allow public school teachers and employees in Franklin County to be trained as reserve sheriff's deputies. Goes to Senate.


-Passed a bill to further regulate contingency fees paid to outside attorneys hired by state agencies. Goes to governor.




-Passed a resolution memorializing the late state Sen. Hinton Mitchem, D-Albertville.


-Gave final approvals to bills extending the life of the Alabama Athletic Commission and state Board of Podiatry. Go to governor.


-Passed a bill to expand the ability of nurse practitioners to write prescriptions for pain medications. Goes to House.


-Passed a bill to allow some state boards and legislative committees to have meetings where members participate electronically rather than in person. Goes to House.




-Senate Education Committee held a public hearing on a bill to revise the Alabama Accountability Act, but did not vote.




-Senate Education Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 of the Statehouse to consider Common Core school standards.


-Senate Finance and Taxation-General Fund Committee meets at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727.


-Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727.


-Senate Health Committee meets at noon Wednesday in room 304 to consider a bill to restructure the state Medicaid program.


-Senate Judiciary Committee meets at 1 p.m. Wednesday in room 325 to consider school bus safety legislation.


-House Ways and Means General Fund Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. in room 617 to consider a General Fund budget to fund non-education agencies.


-House Judiciary Committee meets at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in room 123 to consider a bill to have all death penalty appeals go directly to the Alabama Supreme Court rather than to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.


-House Education Policy Committee meets at 3 p.m. Wednesday in room 418 to consider a bill to allow home schooled students to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities in public schools.


-House and Senate meet at 9 a.m. Thursday.
