Hundreds of airmen said goodbye to their families in Montgomery this weekend.

The 187th Fighter Wing "Red Tails" are being deployed to Afghanistan. Hundreds of their airmen and numerous planes are being sent overseas to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

This is the first time since Iraqi Freedom that congress deployed the Alabama unit for the combat mission. Before, deployments were shorter and were a combination of different air national guard units. They had a shorter time to prepare, but the airmen say they are ready.

Airman First Class Kenicia Battle said, "We are ready. we've been training a lot and we train very hard. and that we are going to get the mission done and we are going to get it done right."

Sharon Cook, sister of a deployed airman said, "All our freedom that's it. that's part of everything in the military is to do with our freedom and keeping everyone safe."

The airmen will be the eyes in the air for ground troops and provide any necessary force. How long they will be gone is still unknown.
