Inmate at Jefferson County Prison Stabbed to Death

An inmate at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Jefferson County has been stabbed to death during an altercation with another inmate.
   
Alabama Department of Corrections officials said 23-year-old Steven Newell was stabbed at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Prison officials said he was pronounced dead at the prison's health care facility. Prison officials said a weapon has been recovered.
   
Newell was serving an eight-year sentence for assault and theft out of Calhoun County.
   
Inmate James Bennett of Mobile County is being questioned as a suspect. The 43-year-old Bennett is serving a life sentence for three counts of assault and other charges..              The circumstances surrounding Newell's death are under investigation, prison officials said. Donaldson is a maximum security facility in unincorporated Jefferson County near Bessemer.
