By CBS 8 News

Former Republican U.S. Rep. Jack Edwards of Point Clear says he will cross party lines to support Democrat Bob Vance for chief justice.

Edwards told al.com (bit.ly/QGeWzD) that finding the right man for chief justice goes beyond party affiliation, and he considers Vance "the only person qualified for the job."

Vance faces Republican Roy Moore on Nov. 6.

Edwards is the second prominent Republican to back Vance. Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Gorman Houston did it last week.

Edwards represented southwest Alabama in Congress from 1965-1985.
