Alabama DHR: System Glitch Causing Problems With EBT Cards

EBT cards, the cards people use to access food stamps in stores, suddenly stopped working early Saturday.

Xerox, the vendor for EBT cards, reported an equipment problem that caused cards to be declined. The glitch has affected 17 states, including Alabama. Representatives say the issue should be solved within a few hours, and say this has nothing to do with the federal government shutdown.

Alabama Department of Human Resources representatives issued a statement, saying, "The vendor that handles EBT transactions for Alabama is in the process of restoring the system and expects to be operational within the next few hours. The interruption of EBT services in Alabama is not connected with the government shutdown in Washington. A statement will be released once the system is operational."

Barry Spear with AL DHR says stores have a manual way to take down EBT information and then submit later.
