This week it was all about "Sustaining the Mission." For the Salvation Army, that's helping those who need it most.
"It's just a great thing to help our fellow man with the love of God, to help our fellow man and lift them up," said Captain Mark Gilliam with the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army provides shelter, food, clothing and other necessities to the homeless and needy all across our area. Now the Salvation Army needs your help.
"We've had some tough years where fundraising's been difficult, and that's why we have that in-house debt and that debt again, is to our headquarters for their support that they give us. But they're willing to forgive it and when that's done, we're going to be able to continue with our mission," said Gilliam.
Each dollar this week counts three times toward forgiving that debt, said Gilliam.
This week the Salvation Army collected your donations at Chick-fil-A restaurants across Montgomery, raising almost $1,000. Friday, we wound things up with the Alabama News Network Telethon, raising more than $2,800. At Bruster's Real Ice Cream at Montgomery and Prattville, ten percent of everything sold went to the Salvation Army.
"I just think it's really good to give back to the community and for people who need help and stuff and I just believe that it's good, teaching the kids to give back as much as possible. It's just a good way to help out," said Keri Kelley, who donated at Bruster's.
For volunteers and Salvation Army workers, it's a reminder of just how much good a community can do together.
"It makes us feel that people have a heart in the community and the neighborhood and really makes us feel like its worth us being out here," said Joy McMullin with the Salvation Army.
"It shows you that you're not selfish and that you do care about other people, so any time that you see somebody making a donation, you can tell they have a heart," said LaTonya Duncan, Salvation Army Store Manager.
The Salvation Army's campaign to raise money will continue all summer. To find out how you can help, contact the Salvation Army in Montgomery at 265-0281.
