Alabama Senate Passes Legislative Pay Bill

The Alabama Senate has passed a heavily amended version of legislation designed to tie legislators' compensation to the state's median household income.

The Senate voted 28-6 Tuesday evening, although some senators questioned whether the final version of the bill was constitutional.

The original bill, as passed by the House, would have repealed a 61 percent raise the Legislature gave itself in 2007 and reduced the average compensation for legislators from $53,288 to $40,474. It would take effect if approved by Alabama voters in a statewide referendum in 2014. The Senate made numerous changes, including requiring current legislators who were serving in 2007 to refund the raise.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said a conference committee will have to work out the conflicts between the House and Senate.
