Alabama's Licensing Boards Not Following Immigration Law

By Heather VacLav

Auditors say parts of Alabama's state government are not verifying the legal status of people getting professional licenses.

According to reports released Friday from the State Department of Examiners of Public Accounts, several state agencies and offices are not following protocol for the state law targeting illegal immigrants.

The audits said the licensing boards should force applicants to sign a declaration of citizenship.

They also need to make sure applicants show one of several approved documents to verify they are legal residents.
