Annual Greenville Police Memorial Held Wednesday
CBS 8 News is covering Greenville where law enforcement officers gathered Wednesday morning for the annual police memorial at Lurleen B Wallace Community College.
Nearly 200 people showed up to commemorate the lives of officers who were killed in the line of duty. The Greenville Police Department lost three officers over the years in 1904, 1966, and 1994. But today was also a day of celebration. Several officers were recognized for their efforts this past year. Police Chief, Lonzo Ingram, says the memorial is more than just an event to him. "This is the time we remember Gary Heath. Gary Heath was the last police officer that was killed in the line of duty. I was police chief when he was killed. You always remember that. If it's on your watch, it means so much more to you to do this. Just to call his name and remember him," says Ingram. Ingram says school resource officer, Van Simms, was awarded Officer of the Year. He says Simms is a dedicated officer, focused on guiding the children of Greenville Middle School.
