Another Montgomery Mall Plan

(Montgomery) -- Montgomery Public School officials have announced plans to buy the old Parisian Department store at the empty Montgomery Mall. They want to use it as a home to M-Tech, a Montgomery technology school.

The announcement came during an education forum at Carver High School last night. If it happens, it will mean both ends of the old mall will be dependent on tax dollars. The other end, where the Steve & Barry's clothing store was last located, is being turned into a police and fire department facility.

The River's Edge Church in Montgomery was in the process of buying the Parisian for a new home, and their website this morning still indicates it is buying the property. 

The largest part of the mall, between those two anchor stores, has been considered by several developers, mostly for medical-related purposes. But all of the proposals have failed.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange has been trying to develop the empty site because it is a drag on development in entire area. He hopes the police and fire facility will serve to stabilize the area and encourage development.

As recently as 1999,  Montgomery Mall was a regional retail center, filled with stores and packed with shoppers.
