Authorities Need Help Nabbing Calhoun High Burglar

By Jessica Gertler

From Lowndes County -- Deputies need your help finding a man they say stole electronics and vandalized a high school. They say the suspect is armed and dangerous and is living in the Montgomery area.

Thousands of dollars worth of electronics was stolen from Calhoun High last spring. Investigators say since then, they've been speaking with community members and have found the man who did it. They say he is a former Tiger and is now a danger to society.

"Why he would come back and tear up his own school? I don't understand," says Lt. Lashun Hutson with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Dept.

Hutson is looking for Deon Jenkins. He says Jenkins broke in Calhoun High school in April, tore apart the front office, classrooms and library, and then made away with $10,000 worth of electronics.

"Arrest warrants have been issued for him for theft of property," Hutson says.

He says Jenkins has been selling the equipment, and he says he found two laptops in Montgomery and Prattville.

"If you can imagine walking into an area that has been completely ram-sacked," says Principal Kenneth Fair.

Fair says he still can't believe that someone would want to steal from a school.

"That was the first thing that came through my mind. Why? The school does so much good in the community," Fair says.

Hutson is hoping the community can help find Jenkins, and whoever else was involved. He's hoping to bring some justice to a school he calls his own.

"My kids graduated from here, so I am a Calhoun Tiger too even though I didn't go to Calhoun. It is my effort to find out who did it and prosecute them," he says. "I'm going to do that."

Fair says the damage has been repaired just in time for school to start back up August 19.

Investigators say Jenkins has been connected to several burglaries in the past. If you have seen him or know of his whereabouts, you're asked to call the Lowndes county sheriff's office at (334) 548-2222. You can remain anonymous.
