It was one of the most gruesome murder cases in city history and now the man convicted of the crime is dead.

Brent Springford Junior killed his mother and father with an ax handle inside their home in the Garden District on Thanksgiving Day, 2004.

Prison officials say he was found unresponsive in his cell while serving life without parole. It was two weeks after the murders of Brent and Charlotte Springford police arrested their son, Brent Springford Junior, in Boulder, Colorado.

Since then, he's been behind bars. Montgomery County District Attorney, Ellen Brooks, who tried the case,  says while the call she received was unexpected, she says she wonders whether it will bring some closure to the family.

"Certainly a shock because he was not ill. My first question is how? What happened? And while it's still early, an autopsy is being performed which is routine with any prison death," Said Brooks.

Springford was found unresponsive in his cell at Donaldson Correctional Facility, where he was taken to the infirmary, then to a Birmingham hospital.

Brooks says that's where he died after complaining about some sudden pain. Although nearly nine years have passed, Brooks says it was a case that she'll never forget.

"The fact it was a family... an inter-family crime... I think also stands out. Those are so difficult because you know the perpetrator, you know the victims. You can imagine how emotional that is! The pain never goes away," Said Brooks.

Brooks says they're waiting on results from his autopsy, but no foul play is suspected. Springford was 37 years old.

Prison officials say Springford may have died from natural causes. Alabama News Network will keep you updated when the autopsy results are released.
