According to the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations, every county in the state experienced unemployment increases during the month of June: including Butler County.

The county's unemployment rate is up to 12.7%, which is nearly a 2-point increase compared to last month.

Chairman of the Butler County Industrial Development Authority, Steve Norman, says they'll be focusing on a workforce development program to help job-hunters.

"So that we can make sure we're providing the type of employees that our current employers need, as well as any potential employers that we may be able to attract here. And we think that's a critical thing for us to be focusing on."

ADIR officials say counties are seeing unemployment rates go up because of an increase in the labor force. They say it's a usual trend during the summer.

And Greenville's Piggly Wiggly Store Manager, Wesley Nichols, has noticed an increase in the number of applicants at his store.

"Yeah, I've got a steady workforce, but we've seen a major increase in applicants and inquiries about job openings in different positions."

ADIR says the seasonal increase is due to teachers and education employees who are not working over the summer, as well as students trying to enter the job market.
