Candlelight Vigil Held For Dorothy Leatherwood

By Catalina Trivino

A candlelight vigil was held Monday night for the 72-year-old woman who was killed last week in her Georgiana home...

Dozens of people gathered for the candlelight to celebrate Dorothy Leatherwood's life. It was held outside of her home. People stood with the family to reflect on her life, sharing stories, praying and singing. Seventy-two balloons were also released in the sky, signifying as Leatherwood's age.

"It meant a lot," Said Leatherwood's niece, Pamela Lewis, about having people come to support her aunt. "I knew that my aunt had touched the community. And it touched me to see everybody come out as a whole and support what we're here for -- her death. She didn't die in vain."

"None of this should've ever happened," Said family friend, Janet Simpson, about Leatherwood's death. "It is senseless. For no reason, she is lying down in the funeral home right now. And what's the motive? We have no idea. And it's hard to understand, but one day we will understand it."

Leatherwood's funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 am at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Georgiana. The family is inviting anyone to attend.
