The Commissioner of Alabama's prison system is responding to the allegations of sexual abuse at Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka.

Commissioner Kim Thomas spoke with CBS 8 today, and says that the Department of Corrections is investigating the alleged sexual abuse of inmates by guards at Tutwiler.

Thomas says he does not tolerate the alleged actions.

"My people know that this is something that I won't tolerate. It's one of the things that egregious to me. It's a violation of our oath that we are to uphold the constitution and follow the state law. We want to investigate these things and let the wrongdoers go to jail if that's the decision of the judge and the prosecutor in each of these cases", says Thomas.

The Equal Justice Initiative contends that guards use intimidation and threats of punishment to discourage women from reporting the sexual abuse.

The watchdog group - the Equal Justice Initiative says it filed a complaint with the Justice Department on Tuesday claiming that guards at the Prison have raped inmates, exchanged smuggled contraband for sexual favors, and even gotten some inmates pregnant.
