A Dallas County man faces animal neglect and animal cruelty charges after authorities say they were alerted to a group of neglected horses.

Roger Lecuyer was arrested last week and charged with one count each of animal neglect-- animal cruelty-- and improper burial and disposal of livestock-- after authorities say they found malnourished horses-- and a dead horse on his property.

Lecuyer says the animals were already in bad shape when he got them from the stockyard-- and he was trying to nurse them back to health.

"We don't know if he was buying them cheap and trying to sell them for profit," said Dallas County Sheriff's Investigator Sgt. Mike Granthum.

"What we do know is that there were some malnourished horses on his property, we do know there were some sores on the horses that weren't properly being cared for. That led us to monitor his property and we had several concerned citizens that's come up and they're telling us about the stench and about the dead horse."

Authorities say Lecuyer is now out on bond. They say all three charges are misdemeanors-- punishable by up to one year in the county jail -- and fines if he's convicted.
