Democratic Leaders Want Possible Special Session Postponed
Democratic leaders in the legislature are urging Governor Robert Bentley to postpone calling a special session. Senate Minority Leader Roger Bedford and House Minority Leader Craig Ford are calling for a postponement because of the financial crisis the state is facing. They say a special session may be called at the end of August with the goal to put pressure on groups that might oppose the constitutional amendment that will be voted on in September. That amendment would allow the state's general fund budget to take money out of the state's oil and gas fund, known as the Alabama Trust Fund.
Bedford and Ford say if the amendment doesn't pass, the governor will have to either declare budget cuts or call another special session, which will cost taxpayers more money. |
