Alabama's June 3rd primary is just around the corner and one hot legislative race could be decided that day.

Three men are running for the House district 76 seat, which covers part of Montgomery.

The race is pitting a 20 year veteran of the state house against two challengers, a Montgomery City Councilman as well as a former candidate from 2010.

With no republicans running, we could see a winner out of the primary, unless it heads to a runoff.
All three men, incumbent Thad McClammy, Maurice Rollins and Tracy Larkin, are natives of Montgomery.

Larkin, who is serving his third term as a montgomery city councilman, says lawmakers have lost focus on what's important.

"Some of the issues that have now come to predominate state government, the abortion laws, the immigration laws, the laws against the public education system, I think have been detrimental to the state and I would like to provide some sense of balance," said Larkin.

Maurice Rollins ran for the house seat back in 2010 and lost to McClammy. He says his priority would be raising up the neighborhood that he's watched decay.

"In District 76 we have more dilapidated shopping centers, more abandonded houses, and I think when I become elected to state representative we'll make sure that we recruit, that we build a partnership and manage our resources so they're not all on the east side of town, but they're in our district," said Rollins.

Thad McClammy is in his 5th term as state representative. He says his biggest accomplishment while serving was to draft a bill to help keep students in school.

"We was able to get the mandatory attendance age raised from 16 to 17 so there's now not a gap. If you turn a young person loose in the streets at 16 years old, number one if they haven't finished high school it's extremely difficult to compete and get a job. At 16 they didn't stand a chance," said McClammy.

In the event that no one wins a majority of the votes on June third, a runoff will be held on July 15th.
