Democrats Propose Answer to Medicaid Money Crisis
Democratic leaders in the Alabama House and Senate have proposed a complicated plan they say would pump enough money into the General Fund budget to adequately fund Alabama's Medicaid program. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has said the General Fund budget pending in the Senate is more than $200 million short of what's needed to fund Medicaid. House Minority Leader Craig Ford of Gadsden and Senate Minority Leader Roger Bedford of Russellville Wednesday offered a plan they said would borrow from an industrial development fund and take money from an education budget savings account. Bedford and Ford said their plan would protect Medicaid. Republican House Speaker Mike Hubbard said GOP leaders are meeting with Bentley to discuss ways to fund Medicaid, which might include parts of the Democrats' plan.
