A Montgomery woman is searching for answers after her family dog was shot and killed by a Montgomery Police Officer - then dumped into a city garbage truck.

Montgomery police said a sanitation worker making his morning rounds on Raintree Drive was attacked by two pitbulls running loose in the neighborhood.

An officer who came to help was then reportedly attacked, as well. Police said he fired two rounds killing one of the pitbulls.

The owner later showed up, but the dog had already been placed in the garbage truck.

"They didn't try to help and then they wouldn't allow me to get my dog out of the garbage truck and they were taking him to the landfill," said the dog owner, who asked to not be named.

The City of Montgomery sent CBS 8 a statement saying they feel they made the right decision to remove the dog carcass since the owner was not around. They added by the time they arrived, it was too late to remove the dog from the garbage truck.

Police said this incident isn't the first involving that same owner's dogs and that the owner was breaking the city's leash law.
