Ahead of severe weather season, local emergency managers showed people how to get ready for mother nature's worst at Family Emergency Preparedness Day.

The yearly event was set up inside the Eastdale Mall by the Montgomery city and county emergency management agency.

It featured interactive displays, demonstrations, fun giveaways, and the opportunity for people to meet local first responders.

The goal is to make sure people are aware and prepared of the dangers with severe weather affecting Alabama like tornadoes, hurricanes, and/or thunderstorms.

"Well, we expect people to walk away with knowing what we do in case of a disaster," said Brenda M. Mitchell, director of emergency management for Montgomery. "We want them to walk away more prepared than when they came."

Preparedness Day highlights also included the National Weather Service's tornado simulator and Alabama Power's power line safety exhibit.
