Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Recognized as National Historic Landmark

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma receives the highest level of recognition that can be awarded to a historic site.

The bridge has been designated a national historic landmark for its value to the heritage of the country because of its association with the Civil Rights Movement.

The bridge was the site where a group of peaceful protesters were attacked by state troopers in 1965 which helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

"By this being accepted in the national registry people who didn't even know about the bridge probably will now so it should even further increase our tourism," said Dallas County probate Judge Kim Ballard.

The designation was awarded by the National Park Service and the Secretary of the Interior.
