Elton John on Alabama's HIV+ PrisonersWrite an Op-Ed piece in the Washington Post
(Washington, D.C.) -- Singer and AIDS activist Elton John has written an Op-Ed piece that blasts Alabama and South Carolina for segregating HIV+ inmates from the general prison population. His commentary comes as a Federal Court trial begins in Montgomery on a lawsuit filed by eight prisoners against the Alabama policy. John writes that the policy reminds people "what it was like to live with HIV/AIDS in the 1980's." And says they are blatantly and dangerously discriminatory. John argues that AIDS is now a controllable disease, and inmates on medication are no risk to other prisoners. John established an AIDS foundation twenty years ago to reduce the stigma against people with AIDS, and that Alabama policy reminds him his work is not done. Note: Read the Elton John piece here.
