A former school superintendent in central Alabama has been asked to repay nearly $80,000 after a state audit determined his buyout was unauthorized.

An Examiners of Public Accounts audit completed Friday found the Autauga County Board of Education did not have the authority to offer a buyout to former superintendent Greg Faulkner. The audit says the board had no authority to buy out an elected superintendent's term of office.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports

Faulkner was given more than $79,100 to retire April 30, 2012 instead of at the end of his term on Dec. 31, 2012.
