From the West Alabama Newsroom--  Final preparations are underway for the annual Battle of Selma Civil War Reenactment.

The four-day event features nearly a dozen separate events -- highlighted by two Civil War battle re-enactments.

Work crews are putting the finishing touches on the battlefield -- and a controversial Confederate Memorial site in Old Live Oak Cemetery where a memorial service is held each year.

"It's about safety and things like that and certainly we want it to be as entertaining and attractive as well as informative for those who visit us, said Selma Mayor George Evans. "We're just moving on, history is history, and we're moving on taking into account the past as well as the present and the future."

The Battle of Selma Reenactment kicks off Thursday -- and runs through Sunday. This year is the 149th Anniversary of Battle of Selma.
