Fire Severely Damages Historic Home in Selma

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom-- The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that severely damaged a historic landmark in the city of Selma.

The John Tyler Morgan home in the city's Old Town historic district went up in flames Friday evening. Selma fire officials say the back of house was fully involved when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Nancy Bennett with the Selma-Dallas Co. Historic Preservation Society says the antebellum house was the childhood home of former U.S. Senator John Tyler Morgan -- and pre-dates the Civil War.

"Any time you lose a historic property, you lose a part of your history, you lose a part of the fabric of your community and it's a tremendous loss," said Bennett.

Old Town residents say the house had been vacant for about a year.
