Authorities say a state prisoner is dead and another is under investigation following a deadly attack at Elmore Correctional Facility.

Prison officials say 34-year-old Derrick Dennis died at a hospital in Montgomery on Tuesday. He was hurt during an altercation with another inmate on Saturday.

Dennis was serving time for rape, assault and burglary after being convicted in Jefferson County. He was sentenced in January 2006.

Corrections officials say they have identified another prisoner as a suspect, but there's no word on any charges.

The Elmore prison is a medium-security lockup with about 1,180 inmates.
