Judge Denies New Trial for Former Gov. Don SiegelmanA federal judge has denied a motion by former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman seeking a new trial on federal bribery and other charges.
U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller denied the motion Thursday, saying it was almost identical to one he had denied in January for a co-defendant, former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy.
Siegelman and Scrushy were convicted in 2006 on charges that Scrushy arranged $500,000 in contributions to Siegelman's campaign for a state lottery in exchange for the governor appointing Scrushy to an important hospital regulatory board.
Fuller said in the ruling he had already rejected the arguments made by Siegelman when he turned down Scrushy's motion.
