Lawmaker Expected to Switch Political Parties

State Democratic Party Chairman Mark Kennedy said he expects Democratic state Sen. Jerry Fielding to switch to the Republican Party.

Fielding did not return telephone calls seeking comments on Kennedy's announcement Monday. Fielding spent 26 years as a Democratic judge in Talladega County before being elected to the state Senate in 2010.

Kennedy said Fielding is buckling under pressure from a Republican supermajority that is trying to drive every white Democrat out of office. New legislative districts approved by the Republican supermajority bring more Republican-leaning areas into Fielding's district.

Republican Party leaders confirmed they have been trying to recruit Fielding, but they left a confirmation of a party switch to him. If Fielding switches, the Senate will have 23 Republicans, 11 Democrats and 1 independent.
