Troy University is getting ready to kick off football season this weekend, with its season opener against the UAB Blazers at Birmingham's Legion Field. Now Coach Larry Blakeney is putting out the call for fans to turn out and fill the stands with cardinal, black and silver.

"We certainly need them there. We're hopeful that we'll get off to a good start as a team, and they can really help us get off to that good start," he said.

Troy students we spoke to were split about whether they'd make the two hour trip North. "I am going to the game, actually, me and a bunch of my friends are all going to take a road trip and watch it," said Tatum Meadows, who's traveling for her first away game.

Students tell us it helps that the game is in-state, and SGA President Will Thompson predicts a better-than-average turnout. "UAB is a big game for us, it's an in-state rivalry, so naturally, the interest level from a student's perspective is always very high," he said.

Still, not everyone will be able to make the trip. "I'm not going to be able to, but I look forward to going to them in the future," said Nick Norris, a freshman.

Last year, the Trojans beat the Blazers by a single point. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 A.M. at Legion Field. The SGA says that the university is providing buses for students who need transportation to and from the game.
