By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  A Marengo County Commissioner and his son -- are arrested -- and charged with five counts of theft.

Commissioner Fred Armstead and his son, Fred Armstead, Jr., were arrested Monday on five counts of first-degree theft of property -- after a two year investigation.

Sheriff's investigator Randy Sanders says the two men took five cars from the county impound and sold them as scrap metal-- but didn't have the legal authority to do so.

"These cars had nothing to do with the commission they belonged to the sheriff's department and various individuals, they were not his to take," said Sanders.

A check for the sale of the cars was made payable to the sheriff's office -- which they say they are holding as evidence.

Both men are now free on a $25,000 dollars bond.
