Montgomery Co. Humane Shelter Reaching Max Capacity
The Humane Society in Montgomery says this summer, they've had 20 percent more cats and dogs in need of homes than normal. They say the worst part is dozens of stray animals continue to pour in.
Every room is full at the Humane Shelter in Montgomery. A trend Officer Scott Hill says he sees every summer. "Usually during the spring they start having babies," says Scott. "So our intake really sky-rockets." Hill says they can take up to 250 animals, and space is getting tight. But he says he's facing a bigger problem. In the last couple days, the city's fireworks and recent thunderstorms has animals running for cover. "I picked up quite a few last night that were running at large in the county, so you know it possibly could be from the fireworks or thunderstorms," he says. "What we would like for people to realize is that a lot of dogs and cats are gun shy. You know, they hear noises that scare them." Kevin Bowers says he heard about the recent influx of animals. That's why he's taking home Toby. "I actually never had a dog before, so this would be the first dog I've ever had, so it's definitely a nice thing to do," Bowers says. Lindsey Fisher and Erika Warren say they've decided to adopt, because they've seen dozens of stray dogs and cats flooding the area. "Out by my house and my mother in law's house there's a lot of cats, not so many dogs, but a ton of cats," says Warren. They say by taking home a dog, they'll be keeping one less animal off the streets. "It's better to adopt from a human shelter and save a life," says Fisher.
