As the U.S. flag was lowered to half staff, local first responders saluted in memory of those men and women who ran toward the destruction of the twin towers in New York City.

Montgomery Director of Public Safety Chris Murphy was supposed to be in the World Trade Center building on September 12, but everything changed the day before.

"As a former secret service agent and a supervisor in that agency, the new york field office was located in number 7 World Trade Center. Our office was completely destroyed. We were able to get all of our employees out because of fire drills," said Murphy.

One of his agents brought back a piece of the rubble that reminds him of that day.

Across town, Habitat for Humanity used this as a day of service as well as remembrance. Members held their own ceremony to remember the those who lost their lives. One Montgomery police officer says he's honored to be a first responder like those in New York.

"It makes me feel very proud. I get a chance to help out people. I remember back what happened on 9/11. Of course I've been with the Montgomery Police Department about 10 or 11 years and there's dedication and getting a chance to help somebody," said Theodore Williams.

Volunteers and veterans worked all morning to help a family build a new home. Claire Smith feels like those who gave their time honored the victims and servicemen from years ago.

"Absolutely. That was kind of the whole work for the combination to come and do service, to honor those people who've fought and lost their lives and are still fighting overseas for us to have this freedom," said Smith.
