Multiple Arrests Made After Large Copper Thefts in Pike Co.

By Sarah Cantey

Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas describes it as a tedious and time consuming investigation, covering Pike, Crenshaw and Coffee counties. But now six people are behind bars in what the Sheriff is calling drug-related crime.

A month ago after more than 1,000 feet of copper was stolen from Mike Sanders' irrigation system.
Alfa Insurance offered a $10,000 reward. Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas says that got the ball rolling in a crime that is often hard to solve. Sheriff Thomas said, "it started generating interest, it started generating conversation in hopes that they might recover that money. Which is very important. The lifeline to what we do is information."
Investigators connected the dots, arresting Michael Allen and Jonathan Green. Investigators said the two were responsible for thefts at Sanders' farm and Tom Finlay's farm just a short distance away. But that wasn't the crimes didn't stop there.
Sheriff Thomas said, "Then we developed information on where stolen property was located and possible meth lab."
The sheriff said they found dozens of stolen items and arrested four more suspects.
Mike Sanders said, "it feels good to know that they're caught but it still a lot of work to put the machine back into operation."
In fact the thieves damage totaled thousands of dollars at Sanders' farm for only about 7-hundred dollars sold in scrap copper.

"it hurts and it costs us all. We all have a tremendous responsibility to support the neighborhood. Because if we don't protect our neighborhoods together, somebody else is going to take it away."
The sheriff said there is still one more suspect they are looking for. He didn't want to release a name but said more charges are expected.
The arrests are a result of the work by Pike, Coffee and Crenshaw County Sheriff's offices, Troy Police Department, District Attorney's office, the state's agriculture and rural crimes unit, and ALFA insurance.
