From the West Alabama newsroom--  Alabama State President Gwendolyn Boyd spent part of her second day on the job in Marion at the place where the university got its start.

Boyd was the keynote speaker for the Founder's Week Kickoff Celebration at the Lincoln School. She said its important to remember and pay respect the vision of the school founders.

Alabama State grew out of the Lincoln School when it moved from Marion to Montgomery in 1887.

"To the credit of Dr. Boyd to recognize that this is indeed the birthplace of Alabama State University. Its also the birthplace of Lincoln School. We're one root, two branches and she recognizes that we are all one family," said Lincolnite Club, Inc. National President, Thomas Miree.

The Lincoln School was founded in 1867 by nine newly freed slaves.
