New Music Hall Dedicated To Music Icon
Troy University dedicates a building to a man that's trained more high school band directors than any other music educator in the nation.
A ceremony was held to dedicate the new $7.5 million building to Dr. John M. Long. He spent more than 30 years as director of bands and even though he's retired, his presence and legacy is still felt in the school of music.
The new hall adds four times the amount of space for the Sound of the South Band, choirs and dance programs. Dr. Long was inducted into the National band Association's Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Conductors. He's received numerous other national recognitions.
Dr. John Long, Director Emeritus of Troy University Bands said, "I've been retired 16 years now, 17 years but I enjoyed it everyday of my life. I enjoyed working with the band. I never had a day I didn't enjoy. And if I could work 1,000 years I'd enjoy it that much too."
Troy Mayor Jason Reeves announced that the council will rename the street behind the new music hall to Dr. John M. Long Avenue.
