Parents Raise Concern Montgomery's Splash Pad, City Says Water is SafeMontgomery's splash pad on the Riverfront is popular as a free way to cool down the heat of the summer, but some parents feel it’s not being properly taken care of.
As exciting as Montgomery's splash pad is for the kids...some parents say lately the water is a little murkier than usual.
“With the rain, the mud comes around, it just stays, it doesn't soak in as well as it could,” said Kelly Gleisner, Montgomery mother of three. “The kids know not to drink it, so they have fun.”
There is a ring of mud around the splash pad, and parents believe it’s combining with the fountain water. However, Montgomery Deputy Mayor Jeff Downes says parents don't have to worry about the actual water.
“We have certified from our private contractor that the water is safe,” Downes said.
Standing in and around the fountain, there is a slight chemical smell to the water, and parents like Gleisner say that tells her its germ free
Beyond the actual water, is the maintenance for the ware and tare on the splash pad.
“It has really exceeded our expectations for the demand for the use,” Downes said. But with the high demand, come some deterioration and the need for maintenance.
“The real challenge that we have is the fact that with such demand we have to pick off peak times to spruce up and polish our attraction,” Downes said.
Gleinser says she has seen other splash pads in worst condition, so she doesn’t mind it.
“Yes its peeled back and yes there are some issues with it, but my kids are pretty good with it,” she said.
Downes told CBS-8 News it was the first splash pad complaint he’s heard of. “We will certainly have further conversations with the water board,” he said.
The City of Montgomery says it intends to do some patching of the heavily used areas of the splash pad this fall.
