Students in East Montgomery have been waiting a long time for a high school of their own.

The new Park Crossing High School is now officially ready for students.

This high school has been a dream for at least the last 18 years. It's truly a big step for education in town.

"I think this is huge for Montgomery because we've not had a new non-replacement high school since 1968. So we now have a new high school on the west side and we have a new high school on the east side," said Montgomery Superintendent Barbara Thompson.

The school was designed to look like a college campus. The 28 classrooms are covered with windows to make it feel like a very open environment. There's even amphitheater style seating near the stairwells. Unlike other schools, students are actually encouraged to bring their iPads and cell phones to school.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange says this new school is going to be a huge asset to the city's school system.

"This is a game changer, you know to have this joined with the number one magnet school in the entire united states and the number one one high school in the state of Alabama and now we've got the newest high school in the state," said Mayor Strange.

The school is also taking a different approach to teaching, moving away from strict testing based curriculum.

"We're going to be embarking on a new journey, entering in some new curricular ideas. Where our students become more of a problem solver, work through different strategies with project based learning," said Principal Rocky Smith.

Students will have their first opportunity to walk through these doors on the first day of school on August 19.

The new school cost about $34 million.

The school will start with only 9th and 10th graders, then phase in a new grade level each year.
