From the CBS 8 Troy Newsroom--    People are speaking out after Troy University's Athletic Department announced its support of a football signee who is charged with breaking in and vandalizing Elba High School.

Michael Lindsey will be attending Troy University in the fall on a full football scholarship. But after being accused of felony burglary, some folks in Troy don't think that's a good idea.

Elba Police say last week, four 18-year-olds were arrested on felony burglary charges after they say they broke in and vandalized Elba High School leaving $30,000 worth of damage.

Among the four arrested was Michael Lindsey, the M.V.P. player in last year's Class 2A State Championship game and a Trojan signee.

Troy university's athletic department refused to go on camera, but they have issued a statement saying they are gathering facts before they take action.

But some say that's not enough.

"You've got to have some sort of punishment. Do you want to throw him in jail forever? No. Of course not. But you definitely want some retribution for it," says Maurice Burchill.

While others believe everyone deserves a second chance.

"I do think he's a kid. I mean God knows, we've all done lots of things for our senior pranks that if it had been looked the wrong way could have hurt people," says Caroline Franklin.

"I mean this shouldn't ruin the rest of his life because of that. I mean, then again, it's a second chance. Not a third," says Rich Raulerson.

Police say the damage was so bad that they had to shut the school down for a day to clean up the mess.

If convicted of the felony, the four face up to ten years in prison.
