Regulatory Bill for Alabama Abortion Clinics Fails
A bill passed by the Alabama House to establish stricter rules for abortion clinics has failed in a state Senate committee. Republican Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin of Pelham said Tuesday her bill is finished because the Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee did not bring it up for a vote on the last day for the committee to consider bills in the 2012 legislative session. McClurkin got her bill through the House 93-4 last week. It would have required abortion clinic to meet the same standards as ambulatory care clinics. She said she will reintroduce the bill for the 2013 session, which starts in February. Another bill passed by the Legislature last week provides that health insurance policies offered in an Alabama insurance exchange won't cover elective abortions. (Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.
